Fall/Winter 2013 Fashion Trends: The Runway At Your Fingertips – PART 1

Fall fashion season is fast approaching and, as this is Angeliqué’s very first blog post, I would like to dedicate it to 2013 Fall/Winter trends straight off the runways of today’s hottest designers. You will be able to update your style with the latest color and fashion trends for the upcoming season including amazing nail dressings for the perfect up-to-date mani.

FASHION: Color Noir – Atelier Versace Couture

Crocodiles everywhere! Among the mink, sequins, and tulle, Versace definitely captured the colors of 2013 fall. This season we’re seeing deep reds and indigo blues across the designer board. The most buzzed about color this fall? OXBLOOD. The high school oxblood Doc Martens of yesterday have reached high-fashion status today.

FINGERTIPS: Oxblood & Indigo

LVX’s “Indigo Bleu” ($16) will polish those paws to noir perfection while RGB’s “Oxblood” ($16) falls right into the season’s new color trend. These deepest-deep colors will compliment any outfit in the cooler months.

Ask Your Nail Tech: For a subtle nod to animal skin, you can ask for quilted nail art at your next salon visit. There are several techniques to reach this textured look. If you’re a DIYer then you should try Croc Nail Paint by Barry M. Not your typical shatter/crackle polish, once applied the lacquer dries in a distinct crocodile pattern. You can sport the trend while still being kind to your animal friends.

FASHION: Trendy Tweeds and Cool Neutrals – Chanel Couture

Karl Lagerfeld’s seemingly futuristic, post-apocalyptic collection for Chanel was beautiful peppered with stunning woven tweeds and a muted rainbow of fifty shades of grey and slate blues. Tweed serves not only our passion for fashion, but is quite functional as a cool weather fabric, once used in Edwardian hunting jackets, for it’s durability and moisture-resistance. The tweed in this collection was often woven with Lurex, a metallic yarn, which helped lend this collection to a very Metropolis look.

FINGERTIPS: Greys & Slates

For a darker, almost beige, grey polish you can get Marc Jacobs Beauty Enamored “Delphine” ($18) at Sephora. For a cooler grey definitely try “Cream Soda” from Ciaté. I own this particular polish and it goes on ultra smooth and is subtle if you like a polished look that is different, but not crazy.

Ask Your Nail Tech: A nail tech skilled in nail art will have an array of nail brushes and stripers that can help create a tweed-like print on your nails. If you’re adventurous and would like to achieve the look above, check out this TUTORIAL from Beautylish.

Fashion: Yikes! Brights! – Christian Dior Couture

Dior haute couture, as interpreted by Raf Simons, was a multicultural representation in color, cut, and fabric treatment this season. We saw a lot of bold prints and loose, voluminous silhouettes referencing a strong African influence. From the east we found a distinct, eye-catching Japanese spiky bai-shibori fabric that perfectly balanced a hard look with the soft, feminine fabric and cut. We even spotted a hint of the Balinese in the draping of some of the fancy frocks. With such a wide range of looks for any discriminating fashionista, we welcome this collection as we welcome the weather it brings.

Fingertips: Primary Brights

Dior Vernis’ “Electric Blue” ($24) is the perfect shade that will undoubtedly match any designer’s bright blue this season (and there’s lots of it!). For a show-stopping red, check out Chanel Le Vernis in “Midnight Red” ($29).

Ask Your Nail Tech: If a secret bad girl lurks within you and you’re daring enough to let your freak flag fly, ask your nail tech for spike nail studs and try a design like the one above from 10 Blank Canvases. If your inner freak is more discreet, you may want to try this 2D homage to spikes from juliannemonday.

FASHION: Black Tie – Balenciaga Ready-To-Wear

This was Alexander Wang’s debut for Balenciaga and the 29 year old high-fashion street wear designer showed what seemed to be a controlled respect for Cristóbal Balenciaga’s couture house in this ready-to-wear collection.  AW’s fashion usually flaunts flesh through straps and sheers, but here we see a more subdued collection true to vintage Cristóbal’s vision. Voluminous coats, bracelet sleeves, structured peplums all paraded down the shattered runway in a two-toned symphony of chic silhouettes. What caught our eye were the fabulous marbled pieces peeking through tops and splashed on dresses and blazers. Think of an ultra-chic Roman goddess man-eater. Totally powerful. In total control.

Matte polishes are perfect for this season. We like OPI “Onyx” ($7.99) topped with Essie “Matte About You” Finisher ($8.99). This versatile top coat is a perfect matte finish for any of your favorite color coats.

Ask Your Nail Tech: If you’d like to flaunt the marble fashion on your digits, ask your nail tech for a marbled nail art like the one above from Raggio di Luna Nails. There are many different techniques to achieve a marbled look like water marbling, however the nails above were created by just masterful mixing and swirling multiple polishes.

FASHION: All That Glitters Is Gold – Christian Siriano

Never a minimalist, Christian Siriano, the 27 year old designer of Project Runway fame and celebrity favorite, walked his collection of early 18th century Russian escort-inspired frocks down the runway in what can only be referred to as Siriano Style. He once again toes the line between gaudy and gorgeous showcasing black velvet and brocade along side metallic wool and opulent gold beading. This entire collection is definitely worth a look-see.

There are a plethora of glitter nail polishes on the market, but the OPI Designer Series Nail Lacquer line is a gorgeous array of pinks and metallic micro-glitter polishes with almost a holographic feel to them. The OPI DS “Exclusive” ($13) above is the perfect shade of pink for this season. If you like a little extra bling with your ring, then you might be a mega-glitter gal. Shimmer Polish in “Tracy” ($12) is the perfect  “tarnished gold” mega-sparkler for this fall. Shimmer Polish is an indie company out of Yorba Linda, CA. I have not had the privilege of using this polish yet, but the unique, custom colors are gorgeous.

Ask Your Nail Tech: Full-glitz is not for everyone. For an office appropriate glimmer nail, try the ombré approach. Elle Magazine published this amazing tutorial if you’d like to try the look yourself.

Fashion: Heavy Metal – Diane von Furstenburg

Diane von Furstenberg referenced her younger, rocker-girl years frolicking about with the likes of David Bowie and Mick Jagger in this season’s collection. Infamous for her legendary wrap dress she’s been designing for over 40yrs, DVF’s use of bold metallic fabric and leather jeans also stalked the runway still with that great 70s vibe hinted in the autumn knits and furs.

KleanColor Nail Lacquer in “Coffee Addict” ($1.75 at Beauty Joint) is that perfect metallic goldzy-bronze; high-shine for autumn. We also like “Metallic Purple” from Gosh ($9.50). Pretty and formaldehyde and toulene-free.

Ask Your Nail Tech: If you need that metallic look, but want your paws to be the belle of the ball, then foils are for you. Foils are applied with a special glue and, with a nail tech seasoned in the technique, should come out smooth and crease-free. You need not be a professional to buy these supplies at your local beauty store. Here is the best how-to video on doing your own foils from Tartofraises.

FASHION: Brights – Prada

In the Prada RTW collection we get a sense of American fashion of the 40s. There are a lot of heavy, heavy fabrics and classic silhouettes, but what we love are the striped tweeds that strutted down the runway, over-sized handbags in tow. Though there were no surprises or fashion revelations in this collection, that’s what made this show a stand-out amongst others. Derelict-glam in what is another almost post-apocolyptic collection makes for the perfect fall recipe.

FINGERTIPS: Yikes! Stripes!

In 2011, OPI released their Muppets Winter Holiday Collection with the colors inspired by those loveable muppets. “Warm and Fozzie” is featured above and you can find it as low as $6 on Amazon. These were limited edition so you’d likely be the only one sporting the shades today. For a beautiful berry hue try Misa Nail Lacquer in “That’s My Little Secret” ($7.50).

Ask Your Nail Tech: Stripes are always very popular and it’s likely your nail tech has the perfect striping brush to achieve the look above from WorkPlayPolish. FingerPaints Nail Color, sold exclusively at Sally Beauty Supply, has a wide variety of striper polishes which feature and extra long, thin brush to do it yourself at home.
